The Project STOMP Team is excited to announce Lights…Camera…Prevention! a substance misuse prevention awareness contest, open to small teams of students who are in grades 6-12. This hands-on learning opportunity challenges student teams to learn more about substance misuse issues and prevention through research, collaboration, and production of a short video and/or radio public service announcement (PSA). This is a great opportunity for students who are already part of a group, club, or organization (e.g., 4-H club, school health class, church group) or a new group of students to get together to build teamwork and leadership skills.

This contest is designed so that youth AND communities benefit! Youth will learn about the harmful effects of substance misuse and build their audio/video production skills, with the goal of getting their final projects out into the community where their prevention-focused messages can help to increase awareness around this important issue. The Project STOMP Team will support your team’s effort with resources and assistance every step of the way.

Q: What topics can youth make an awareness campaign about?

A: Four main categories are approved to choose from:

  • Alcohol
  • Marijuana
  • Opioids/prescription drugs
  • Tobacco/nicotine/vaping

Topics in the category of opioids and prescription drugs, for example, might include oxycodone (Oxycontin), hydrocodone (Vicodin), morphine, or methadone, which are common types of opioids. Video and audio concepts must be related to one of the four categories. The Project STOMP Team is available for guidance and will provide feedback during specific progress intervals during the video or audio project development. Teams will be expected to include information regarding the science of addiction regardless of the topic chosen.

Q: Any suggestions for how we can work together as a team?

A: This project is designed to be completed in-person or virtually. Platforms like Google Hangout, FaceTime, or Zoom are great ways to have team members continue to meet if COVID or the weather makes it difficult to get your team together. All the materials for this contest are available on CyBox (similar to DropBox) and can be distributed to each team member.

Q: What if we need equipment?

A: The entire project is designed to be done using a smartphone or tablet. During orientation, and as part of the participant guide, teams will receive recommendations regarding best practices for getting the best quality audio and video using smartphones/tablets as well as common items found around the home.

Q: How long do we have to finish our awareness campaign?

Q: We don’t have any club members with audio/video experience but we are interested in participating. How can we do this?

A: We have team members who can help! Just let us what you need help with and we can provide some guidance or tips for you to apply. However, it will be helpful if you can identify at least one student who has some audio/video experience to be on your team.
